Slow Reading Rushdie's Midnight's Children

Join Culture Khoj, a community exploring South Asian books and culture for a four-part discussion of Midnight's Children. Slow reading: Midnight’s Children In November and December, we’re taking the slow route through Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. Think of it like slow travel: rather than rushing from one destination to the next, we’re going to stay awhile. Four sessions, four sections of the novel, and plenty of room to sit with the writing, the history, the characters and all the strange, wonderful places Rushdie will take us. The four sessions Thursday, November 5 Book One: Chapters 1 - 8 (inclusive!) The Perforated Sheet → Tick, Tock Thursday, November 19 Book Two: Chapters 1 - 8 (inclusive!) The Fisherman’s Pointing Finger → Alpha and Omega Thursday, December 3 Book Two: Chapters 9 - 15 (inclusive!) The Kolynos Kid → How Saleem Achieved Purity Thursday, December 17 Book Three: Chapters 1 - 7 (inclusive!) The Buddha → Abracadabra All sessions will be held at Robin des Bois, located in Parc La Fontaine from 6:30-8:30pm. You can join us for one session or all four. A single $20 ticket covers your participation across the series! Just purchase your ticket once and email us at [email protected] at least one week before each session so we can make sure we have a spot for you. Who can attend? Khoj’s literary gatherings aren’t only for South Asians. If you’re curious about other cultures, interested in the worlds and histories behind the books we read, you’re very welcome here. You don’t need to come with the “right” background or the perfect interpretation. Everyone gets space to talk, ask questions, share what stood out to them and connect with others. If you’d like to learn more about book club discounts and where to find a copy, email us at [email protected].

CULTURE MONTRÉAL EN CARTE

About this map

Montréal has a rich cultural offering, but information is scattered across websites, social networks, noticeboards and posters. Getting an overview can be difficult. Montréal en culture aims to simplify discovery by bringing cultural activities together in all their variety. The project is also inspired, with some nostalgia, by the weekly calendar of the cultural magazine View, which featured a varied offering, from shows to talks and from popular events to more unconventional activities. Adding a map, Montréal en culture invites you to explore that richness across the city. Still a prototype, this independent project aims to become an essential reference for cultural outings in Montréal.

The site was originally designed for desktop use. A mobile interface is now available.

A broad understanding of culture

The directory takes a broad view of culture: artistic creation, presentation, heritage, knowledge sharing, and opportunities for discovery or participation. It covers the Montréal urban agglomeration, including its associated islands. Its scope develops with the sources and activities recorded.
