MONTRÉAL EN CULTURE

How the site works

Where do the activities come from, how should you read them, and what are the map's limits?

Updated: 21 octobre 2026

Le territoire et le catalogue

The map shows activities in the Montréal urban agglomeration: its boroughs, related municipalities and associated islands, including Sainte-Hélène, Notre-Dame and Bizard. Venues without coordinates, points outside this area and online-only activities do not appear on the map.

The covered area uses the administrative boundaries of boroughs and related municipalities, in a version dated August 24, 2022. Whether a venue appears on the map depends on the accuracy of its address and coordinates.

The catalogue is an evolving selection, not an exhaustive inventory of cultural life. A venue's presence also depends on the activities recorded. Some addresses and locations may be approximate.

From sources to listings

Information comes from organizers, venues, institutions, ticket sellers and cultural directories. It is gathered and structured to support searches by venue, date and interest. Several performances of the same activity may be grouped in one listing.

Despite checks, errors, duplicates or outdated information may remain. Source changes do not necessarily appear immediately in the catalogue. Before travelling or booking, confirm details with the organizer or official ticket seller. You can send corrections to [email protected].

Dates, performances and date ranges

An activity may have one performance, several appointments or span a date range. Performances with known dates appear under By date. Exhibitions, continuously available activities and date ranges without a sufficiently detailed schedule remain under Over a date range.

Days and times are included when documented. Missing end times are not invented. Finished performances are removed from upcoming events when their end time is known; otherwise, display depends on available dates. Ongoing date ranges remain visible. An end at exactly midnight marks the end of the previous day. Calculations use Montréal time.

As time passes, upcoming activities are updated without deleting their listings from the catalogue. This does not trigger a new collection from sources. A selected date range that is entirely in the past may be adjusted with a message.

Understanding the counts

One listing may include several performances, so listing and performance counts can differ. In the data, an occurrence means a performance or published date range. Counts depend on active filters; Visible area also adapts what's on to the current map view.

Recherche d’adresse et localisation

La recherche d’adresse utilise Photon, using OpenStreetMap data. On the map, your text is sent when you search with Go or Enter. In Suggest an activity, the address, city and postal code are sent automatically after a short pause if the venue does not already have coordinates.

The result is used to place the venue in the preview. A suggested new venue is not added to the catalogue automatically. My location requests browser permission. If you save a preference containing a location, it may be kept in this browser. The privacy policy explains how data is used.

Directions and Google Maps

Calculating directions on our map sends your starting location and destination to Valhalla, hosted by FOSSGIS. Travel times are estimates and do not account for live traffic. This public demonstration service may be temporarily unavailable.

The Google icon opens Google Maps in public transit mode, in a new tab or the app depending on your device. The link sends destination coordinates without sending your starting location from our site. You choose the starting point in Google Maps, which applies its own privacy policies.

Basemaps and tools

The custom basemaps use OpenFreeMap, data from OpenStreetMap (© contributeurs, ODbL) et OpenMapTiles. L’affichage s’appuie sur Leaflet et MapLibre. D’autres versions peuvent utiliser un fond CARTO.

Basemaps and some images require an Internet connection; the site does not download a basemap for offline use. To report an error in basemap data, see OpenStreetMap.
